Covellite Theater, Montana

Located in uptown Butte, the Covellite Theater is known as one of the premier concert and event spaces in the city.

The theater holds two event spaces, including the main stage and the Uptown Lounge stage. Together, the two theater spaces welcome up to 500 patrons at a time.

The main stage is a more typical concert space with comfortable theater-style seating, while the Uptown Lounge has that bar vibe, complete with comfy couches, bar stools, and casual dining tables. Beer, wine, canned cocktails, soft drinks, and snacks are available for purchase at the Lounge.

The current nonprofit owners have focused their efforts on creating a multi-functional space, functioning as a concert space and rental venue for events in the community.

The audio and video systems have been updated for high-quality performance options, as well as film viewings, workshops, and talks.

Covellite Theater History

The Covellite Theater is housed in what was once the First Presbyterian Church, built between 1896 and 1897.

Butte took shape with many commercial buildings and five major churches around that time, including the Gothic Revival style First Presbyterian. The building was commissioned by the Church in 1878, by prominent architect, H. M. Patterson. Patterson designed many of Butte’s incredible buildings of the day.

First Presbyterian Church was given a large Gothic arched window at the front, a rose window on the west, and bright redwood paneling doors set into the arched stone casements.

The striking building also has a large corner bell tower and slight crenelated brick towers on each corner, that look a bit like chimneys.

The building has been through many changes over its 125+ years of existence and today is Butte’s premier event venue, becoming the Covellite Theater in the 1990s.
